Importance of Charity in Islam

“The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed of grain which grows seven spikes, in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies the reward for whoever He wills, for Allah is all-Encompassing and knowing.”

– Surah Al-Baqarah 2:261

Charity is one of the five pillars of Islam and an important part of worship for Muslims. There are many verses in Quran which clearly states about spending wealth on charity and its reward. Allah says that every Muslim should spend a little from their wealth on needy people. Your wealth is not decreased by doing this; instead, Allah multiplies what we give. There are two types of charity in Islam; voluntary and obligatory. Obligatory charity is ‘zakat’ which should be given by every Muslim who is financially stable and earns more than a specific amount known as ‘nisaab’. Zakat should be spent on underprivileged or needy people. The other form of charity is called ‘sadqa’ which can be monetary or non-monetary. Sadqa is a voluntary service performed by any Muslim with an intention to help others and seek reward from Allah.

Allah has given us good health, wealth and time so we could use them effectively for the service of Allah and people. The smallest deed can have a huge impact on someone’s life. Our Prophet Muhammad SAW said not to belittle any good deed. Even smiling at others, speaking kindly to them or giving a date fruit to anyone in need is a form of charity for which you get tremendous rewards.

There is another form of charity named ‘sadqah jariyah (ongoing charity)’ through which you earn the reward not only in your life but after your death too. This includes; donating someone a wheelchair, give Quran, planting a tree, donate in building a mosque etc. Through sadqah jariyah, Allah will bless you not only in this world but hereafter as well. Our Prophet Muhammad SAW said, “When a person dies his works end, except for three: ongoing charity, knowledge that is benefited from, and a righteous child who prays for him.”

Therefore, we should make it a habit of performing charity not only to help people but animals as well. The reward we get by putting our time, money and effort into charitable causes for the sake of Allah, will be doubled in this world and will also protect us on the Day of Judgment. Let’s support our fellow human beings and make a difference in our society. A little help goes a long way and can create a huge difference in someone’s life.
