2- Lady Aitchison Hospital
- History
Lady Aitchison Hospital is in second position in our list of top 10 government hospitals in Lahore. The original idea for the establishment of a medical college for the undivided Punjab was placed before the Imperial Government in 1857, but shelved because of ‘War of Independence’, The need was so great that is was decided to make the beginning by establishing a Medical School in 1860.
At that time the only other Medical School in Indo-Pakistan Sub-Continent was situated in Calcutta. In August, 1860, Dr. IB. Scriven of the General Hospital in Calcutta was invited to become the Principal of the proposed Lahore Medical School, which was to be the second such Institution in Indo Pakistan Sub-Continent.
Dr. Scriven with Dr. Smith, a Civil Surgeon, conducted the first Matriculation Examination on the 1st of November, 1860 having arrived in Lahore on 10th of October, 1860. The classes were to be held in and English 20 students qualified for the Hindustani class in initial examination while another qualifying examination was held on the 15th November, 1860 allowing 24 more students to qualify for the class thus producing a total of 44 students for the Hindustani class.
only 5 students were enrolled for the English Class of which only 2 persisted on the College Rolls after a year; one European, and one Indian, English was not widely known in the province at that time.
Until 1870, the Medical School had been granting its own diplomas to Sub-assistant Surgeons and native doctors. With the opening of the Punjab University College that year, it was. arranged so that the new College would undertake the conduct of examination and granting of University diplomas. The first such examination was held in October, 1871 by Diploma in Medicine.
During the next 13 years the Punjab University College awarded diplomas to 145 successful students. It is matter of interest to note that the Medical College has a longer history than the University of the Punjab, and the relationship between the two has always been cordial and cooperative. The College was then as now independent in all affairs in teaching and administration except for conducting examinations.
By 1871, the number of applicants had overtaken the number of available vacancies. That year, 190 candidates applied for 40 vacancies. The Hindustani class was composed of people in government service or those supported by various local funds, the former being inducted by competitive examination. The language of instruction in this class was Urdu.
1870 saw the establishment of a Hakims Class consisting of sons and relatives of Hakims with some knowledge of Unani medical system.

3– Lahore General Hospital
- History
Lahore General Hospital is in third position in our list of top 10 government hospitals in Lahore A piece of land measuring one square and seven acre i.e. (256 Kanals) situated on Ferozpur, Road, Lahore about 17 kilometers from Lahore was proposed for beggar house. The foundation was laid down by her Excellency BEGUM NAHEED SIKANDAR MIRZA W/O Governor General of Pakistan on 27-02-1958. The first phase of the building was completed in late 1958. An opening ceremony was held on 30-09-1958 by her Excellency BEGUM NAHEED SIKANDAR MIRZA
Due to some reasons the proposed beggar house plan was sacked and it was decided by the then Government to provide Health facilities to the general public. Hence the birth of Lahore General Hospital took place in the early 1959.
The opening ceremony of Lahore General Hospital was done by his Excellency MR. AKHTAR HUSSAIN, the Governor West Pakistan on 29-01-1959.

- History

Mayo Hospital was completed in 1870 and it started patient care in 1871. It was named after the Earl of Mayo, the then Viceroy and the Governor General of India.
Encompassing over 54.6 acres of land and the main building with boundary having 11 gates, the hospital is one of the largest hospitals in South East Asia and is a centre of excellence for public benefit. It had bed capacity of 300 beds on the Day of Independence (1947) but now is extended up to 2399 beds. The father of the nation, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah also paid tribute to services rendered by this hospital on his visit to Mayo Hospital dated 19.03.1940.
Mayo Hospital is located in the heart of Lahore City and is surrounded by busy commercial and thickly populated residential areas with famous Anarkali Bazaar, Nila Gumbad, Gawalmandi and the Walled City of Old Lahore around it.
Earlier, after its construction in 1871, the Mayo Hospital was affiliated as a teaching hospital with the King Edward Medical College which came into being in 1860. The hospital was used to be managed by the Medical Superintendent under the administrative control of Government till 1999 when the whole setup was declared as Autonomous Medical Institution and the Mayo Hospital became Allied Hospital of King Edward Medical College It is government hospital in Lahore.
The Principal KEMC and the M.S. Mayo Hospital were placed under the administrative control of a newly created post of Chief Executive. In 2002, the Board of Governors took over the charge of the institution under PMHI Ordinance 2002, according to which the posts of Principal Executive Officer (PEO) / Dean and Deputy Dean were created. In the next year 2003, under another PMHI Ordinance 2003, the Board of Governors was replaced with the Board of Management under which Principal KEMC was declared Head of Institution consisting of KEMC & Mayo Hospital.

The Punjab Institute of Cardiology is government hospital in Lahore, established in 1989, is the first Heart Institute in the Punjab province. Services Hospital is in seventh position in our list of top 10 government hospitals in Lahore In 1958, a separate outpatient department of Mayo Hospital, Lahore was setup for the use of government employees. In 1960, this was converted into 55-bedded and name as Wahdat Hospital ; it had medical and surgical facilities, together with laboratory and X-Rays unit. it was later renamed ” Services Hospital “.
In 1977, the bed strength was increased to 192(50% for the general public) and it became the teaching hospital of Allam Iqbal Medical College , (AMIC). In 1986, various additional buildings were constructed and the bed strength was raised to 904.In 1995, AIMC moved to its new campus, attached to Jinah Hospital . Services Hospital then became attached to the Postgraduate Medical Institute, (PGMI), with increased bed strength of 1096.Services Hospital Lahore was declared as “Autonomous Institution” in 1999. 8- Punjab Institute of Mental Health
- History
Punjab Institute of Mental Health is in eight position in our list of top 10 government hospitals in Lahore History of healthcare services for mentally ill patients in Pakistan can be viewed as before and after the Partition (1947) for convenience. Treatment for psychiatric patients by a medical doctor started with the arrival of Dr Honigberger. He belonged to Hungary and worked as state physician to Maharaja Ranjit Singh in 1812. His services were initially limited to families and close relatives of notables.
After the death of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, Dr Honigberger was appointed in charge of the gunpowder factory and was also asked to treat general patients at the city’s General Hospital, then called Al-Shifa, located outside the Delhi Gate.
Dr Honigberger set up a ward for psychiatric patients in this hospital. So the foundation was laid for future psychiatric services in this region. It was no less than an honour for the city of Lahore. It was named Central Lunatic Asylum, as written in the book ‘Thirty Five years in the East’ written by Dr Honigberger.
Later when the British took over Punjab Dr Honigberger transferred his 12 patients to Dr Smith, the district civil surgeon in Lahore. In 1854, Mr Robert Montgomery, the judicial commissioner of Punjab, floated the idea of building a mental hospital at the site where it stands today, but this could not be materialised for certain reasons.
Those patients were kept on shifting at various places till 1900 due to various reasons. Till the new mental hospital was established at the present place the patients were given under the supervision of Col. Dr Ewen, a psychiatrist who was appointed as the first medical superintendent.
This gentleman headed the hospital till his death in 1914. The hospital remained without a psychiatrist till 1922. Dr Lodge Patch took over as in charge of the hospital. Dr Patch, a psychiatrist worked hard to improve the prevailing conditions and added also new buildings. As a result, the number of patients increased to about 1400. A distinguished psychiatrist of his time, Dr Kraeplin, had also wished to come over here to complete his research during that period.
In 1947, at the time of independence the nation inherited three mental hospitals, one each at Lahore, Hyderabad and Peshawar. There were no qualified psychiatrists to take care of them. The first psychiatrist in a civil setup like that was Dr M. A. A. Aziz who single-handedly served people for years. The late ‘60s and ‘70s saw expansion of psychiatric health services throughout Pakistan and a new mental hospital was established in Dudyal.
The only facility for psychiatric patients in this part of world starting in 1900, turned into Government Mental Hospital and was renamed “ Government Hospital for Psychiatric Diseases” in 1996. The old governing law for these patients “Lunacy Act of 1912” was replaced by “Mental Health Ordinance” in 2001. The hospital was converted to “ Punjab Institute of Mental Health, Lahore” in 2002. Number of staff was increased and new facilities were added to improve services.
This Institute was founded at its present place in the year 1900 AD to provide Health care to Mentally Sick persons. It was named “Lunatic Asylum”. Law was formulated to run it named “Lunacy Act of 1912”. At that time this hospital encompassed a piece of land consisting of 172 Acres, which has shrinked to a piece of land within the boundary walls (2008 AD). The Governing Law Lunacy Act 1912 being unsuitable and inconvenient was replaced by “Mental Health Ordinance in 2001”.
The name of “ Govt. Mental Hospital ” was changed to “ Govt. Hospital for Psychiatric Diseases in 1996, and was renamed as “Punjab Institute of Mental Health” in 2002. It consists of 1400 beds as indoor facility and about 500-600 patients visit Out Patient Deptt. per day and are provided free treatment.

9- Shalamar Hospital
Shalamar Hospital is in ninth position in our list of top 10 government hospitals in Lahore Businessmen Hospital Trust was conceived in 1974. The Trust initially comprised of Chaudhry Nazar Mohammad, Mr. Naseem Saigol, Mr. Mumtaz A Sheikh and Syed Babar Ali. The idea of building a Trust Hospital for the welfare of poor and non-affording patients was floated by the then Chairman, Chaudhry Nazar Mohammad (Late). To materialize this dream, they formed a group of eminent businessmen who believed in social uplift, charity and philanthropic pursuits. These included Mr. Mohammad Husain and Shahbaz-ud-Din Chaudhry. Other issues including building infrastructure and hiring staff was handled by the rest of the Trustees.
A piece of 18 acres land was provided by the government of Punjab to Businessmen Hospital Trust for the establishment of a tertiary care teaching hospital. The location of the land at Shalimar Link Road made it possible for the hospital to extend healthcare facilities not only to the patients of lower income population of Northern Lahore but also to community living in its outskirts.
The team successfully generated Rs. 5 Million for the construction and functioning/running expense of hospital. Hospital’s Architecture was designed by experienced Australian Architects who gave this hospital a unique touch by planning a combination of squares and rectangular style. The hospital structure is designed in a way that it keeps the corridors airy and bright. This proper but natural ventilation reduces odor.
Later Mr. Ibrar A. Mumtaz, Mr. Shahid Hussain, Chaudhry Ahmad Saeed, Mr. Mohammad Munir Chaudhry and Mr. Altaf M. Saleem joined the Trust. Now the Trust comprises of seven members and is working under the leadership of Chaudhry Ahmad Saeed since April 1996. Their active support and cooperation has played an instrumental role in bringing this institute at par with international standards of tertiary care teaching hospital.
The Businessmen Hospital Trust started as a not-for-profit institute in 1978. The name was later changed to Shalamar Hospital, named after historic Shalimar Gardens, as the former name provided an impression that hospital is primarily for the business community. Hospital started working with six basic faculties on Outpatient basis. The rush of patients led Chaudhry Nazar Mohammad and Mr. Mohammad Husain to increase the facilities according to the regularly increasing needs of the community.
