Medical Trusts provide financial help to meet the cost of medical treatments for the poor and needy patients. Despite all these sincere efforts not many people know about the trust organizations. So every patient in dire need of treatment is missing a life saving opportunity which could have helped them to get back to their feet again. Where Is the Problem?

More than 70 million people in Pakistan are living below the poverty line due to which they are unable to undergo proper health treatment if they experience any disease. Estimated amount of surgery backlog in Pakistan is in millions every year.

  • There are not many health insurance plans for underprivileged community. They have to pay out of pocket if they need any medical treatment but due to the limited or no resources, majority is unable to undergo surgical treatment.
  • Beyond the cost of the surgical procedure, they might have to pay for pre and post-operative expenses which includes medical tests, medications, hospital stay and other expenses. It is almost impossible for someone who earns less than $2 a day to pay hefty amount for medical relief.
  • There is lack of advanced medical facilities and medical professionals due to which lower middle class families are unable to avail treatment facilities.
  • There are a limited number of beds in hospitals but the number of patients visiting these hospitals is a lot more.
  • Every second patient including a child is put on a long waiting list and during the waiting period, the patient’s health further deteriorates. In most of the cases, patients expire until their turn comes.
  • There is no advanced healthcare services in slums due to which majority of people have to rely on quacks in their areas.
  • Private hospitals are out of reach for deprived community due to the high costs of consultation fees and surgical procedure.

Conclusion:

Medical trusts are playing a crucial role in our society and to understand their worth we need to take a short look at these healthcare statistics. According to the report, Short Roundup of Health Infrastructure in Pakistan published by Gall up Pakistan, in 2015 there were only 1167 hospitals, 5695 dispensaries, 5464BHUs sub health centers, 733maternity and child health centers, 339TB centers, 118869 total beds and 1613population per bed available across the country. In 2015, the number of registered doctors in Pakistan was 184711; dentist 16652, nurses 94766, midwives 34668 and lady health workers was 16488 to treat about 190 million people at that time.

Over the last 18 years the number of hospitals founded in Pakistan is exponentially low in comparison to the growth of the country’s population so the scarcity of proper medical and healthcare services can be understood easily.

Trust organizations assist the patients who have found themselves in distressing circumstances due to ill health. These organizations are not willingly to let people die just because they cannot afford their own survivals. Thus, Medical trusts are providing financial help to the people in sickness, infirmity or disability or in other medical conditions. In this way the trusts are trying to fill the existing void in our healthcare system.

Free medical camps are of great importance to the poor people who live on a meager income. These people never dare to visit the hospitals or clinics even when they are sick because their meager income is insufficient to bear the expenses of a good health checkup or buy the medicines prescribed by the doctor.

Medical camp is a good way to spread awareness about the Trusts’ scheme, incentives and other charitable facilities. Medical camp is a sustainable method known to increase the health care utilization by the poor population. Through these camps the trusts can introduce them to their targeted patients and at the same time they can light a strong ray of hope for the most unprivileged people and remind them that they aren’t forgotten, uncared or unloved by the society.
